What I Didn´t Know / Lo Que No Sabía

In English:
Lying on the couch, Richard stopped the clenched gasping. Suddenly his body was deathly quiet.

Now I wasn´t afraid. I knelt down on the floor beside him. His eyes were rolled back, white. I put my hands over his hands.

As I gazed into his face, his face lost the touch of pink, becoming pale white. At the same time, I felt the warmth of body heat leave his hands. The thought was confirmed in my mind, "He has died." As a gift the Lord Himself gently gave me the answer.

I bowed my head over my husband´s body, and cried, "Oh, dear Lord, thank you. Thank you for the wonderful gift you have given me for thirty-three years of life shared with this dear man. Thank you that he is with you now."

Little did I know at the time that the Lord had prepared me so well for that response. For six to nine months without my knowledge of it, God had prepared me. Preceding Richard´s death, a persistent thought entered my mind, "Sharing life with a husband is a gift. It is not a right: it is a privilege." Day after day these thoughts came to mind, making me wonder why I always thought about the same thing! In the middle of the night at times these thoughts intensely dominated my mind. The Lord was teachming me something I needed to know -- my husband was a gift, not a right to own, but a privilege to enjoy.

As I kneeled by the couch and bowed my head over Richard´s body, the same thoughts that had been repeated in my mind for months gave me strength for that difficult moment. God had prepared me for my response. I knew God had the right to take Richard, and that I had no right to demand that he should stay longer. The Lord, in His compassion, tenderly prepared me for what was going to hurt me.

From God who is the Father of compassion, from God who loves us and cares for us, my husband was a gift given to me but not my personal belonging. God, in mercy, taught me to be grateful for my husband while I had him. God Himself designated the time span of that gift.

Unselfish and generous is the one great Love of the universe who allows us to form a deep attachment of love within our hearts to another human being, who could if not kept in his proper place, come to rival He who is to be the one great love of our lives.

May secondary love not take the place of perfect love. May the One who gives not be substituted for the gift. May He to whom all allegiance, honor and glory is due not receive less because of the object of our human love, whom we are also asked to love.

Let not our own desires or loved one intrude upon the dominion of God in our hearts. May the gift of a relationship only help and enhance the first - never putting a restriction upon the Love who deserves all.

See His Face / Veré Su Rostro

In English:
Die, Death. The Bible sometimes softens this word naming death "falling asleep." It sounds much better, doesn´t it?

And that is exactly how he appeared after he died. When my daughter arrived at 3 a.m., that is how she found her Dad. Wearing his jeans and green plaid jacket, he looked like he was taking a nap on the couch.

But he was not. He was gone -- gone to heaven. Welcomed home. But gone from us.

We kept Richard´s body with us for two more days. His body was put in a refrigerated casket in my living room. The refrigeration unit helped preserve his body, and we could view him through the glass covering the casket.

Those two early mornings, before anyone else was out of bed, before the phones started ringing, or visitors came to the house, I went silently into the living room. The first rays of the morning sun shone through the window, and into the casket, illuminating the face of my beloved. In silence, alone, I gazed upon his face.

I looked at his face as I had never looked at it before. One hair was out of place, falling on to his forehead. The bridge of his nose seemed narrow. A few dark aging spots marked his skin. I loved his gentle features. The rays of the morning sun lighted what I had known for many years, helping me to gaze upon that beloved face that had communicated love, concern, companionship.

During the course of those two days I kept going back, over and over again to that coffin, to gaze upon his face. I could not look enough.

And then I started to learn a little bit about eternity.

The Bible says, "And they will see his face . . . " (Rev. 22:4) Who will see his face? Well, those who love Him. Someday I will see his face -- not only Richard´s face, but the face of the Lord Jesus Christ. I will gaze upon the face of the Lord Jesus Christ who paid for my sins with His blood, simply because I have believed in Him alone as my Savior and Lord.

For two brief early mornings I gazed on the face of my husband -- gone. But when I pass into heaven, I will see the face of the Lord of the universe and all creation, the face of my Redeemer, Savior and Lord. I will gaze upon Him, never tiring of seeing that beloved face.

The Bible says that the disciples gazed into the sky when Jesus ascended into heaven. The angels said to the disciples, ". . . why do you stand gazing up into heaven?" The disciples felt the absence -- that gap in the sky! He was gone. They could not take their eyes away from the sky, for the hope that there might be just one more glimpse. How could it be real? He was gone.

The two early mornings ended for me. The body of my husband was placed in the cemetery of my Spanish village.

The morning sun continues to shine into my living room. I walk in, and sit alone, gazing. I open the pages of the Holy Bible, and gaze with wonder. "For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." (Gospel of John 1:12).

The moment is coming -- I will gaze face to face.

En español:
Morir. Muerte. A veces la Bíblia suaviza la palabra, nombrándolo "dormir." Suena mejor, ¿no?

Bienvenido a casa.

No podía mirarle bastante.
